November’s gemstone of the month is the beautiful and vibrant topaz!

The beautiful topaz, along with being the 4th wedding anniversary gemstone, is also November’s gemstone of the month. This versatile and popular gemstone is available in a color that suits almost any ensemble or arrangement. Let’s take a closer look at the wonderful world of topaz!

What is November’s Gemstone or Birthstone?

The topaz is available in six primary colors, imperial topaz (yellow/orange), sherry (yellow/brown), yellow, brown, white, and one of the most popular colors, blue. Ranking 8 on the Mohs scale for hardness, topaz can be considered an everyday gemstone, but you need to be careful not to strike it against objects as even though it’s pretty durable, it is prone to chipping and cracking.

Topaz Facts and Symbolism

Topaz grows as a crystal, and it’s during the growth stage that elements within the earth determine its color. It’s believed that topaz got its name from the Sanskrit word ‘tapas,’ which means fire, or from the Greek Island in the Red Sea where it was mined, Topazios.

A 1680-carat ‘diamond,’ believed to be one of the biggest in the world at the time, was discovered in Brazil and named the Braganza Diamond. Later, this large diamond was even set in the Portuguese Crown. However, many years later, upon closer examination, it was discovered that the Braganze Diamond was actually a colorless topaz.

Topaz can grow to massive sizes, with the largest topaz in the world, the El-Dolorado Topaz, weighing in at a whopping 31,000 carats. The El-Dolorado Topaz is believed to be the largest faceted gemstone in the world. It can be seen as part of the Special Exhibitions Gem Collection of the Programa Royal Collections Group, based in Madrid, Spain.

The History of the Topaz

With a rich and diverse history going back thousands of years, topaz has been associated with mystical healing powers, and the Ancient Greeks believed that this beautiful gemstone could increase the wearer’s strength while also making them invisible during times of crisis. Topaz was thought to heal mental and physical ailments during the Middle Ages and prevent death.

The Best Way to Wear Your Topaz Jewelry

Even though topaz is found in various colors, one of the most beautiful and sought-after colors is orange. However, it’s not always the easiest to style. One way to get the most out of your topaz is to pair it with complementary colors. Orange always looks spectacular with greens and blues and neutral colors like grey, black, and white. Because of its bold color, topaz is always going to be the star of the show!
