The Serpent’s Spell: Jewelry Born of Myth, Memory, and Majesty

Explore the rich legacy and cultural mystique behind snake-inspired jewelry where romance, resilience, and regality entwine.

From ancient temples to royal courts, the snake has shed its skin time and again, reborn not only as a guardian and symbol of eternity, but as a muse for some of the most exquisite jewelry ever crafted. In 2025, the Year of the Wood Snake, we once again find ourselves enchanted by its enduring mystique, both timeless and modern.

Discover more about the traditions surrounding the Year of the Snake in  Celebrating the Chinese New Year and Year of the Snake with deBoulle, where we take a closer look at the history behind this culturally significant celebration.

Snake-Inspired Jewelry in the 19th Century

It was during the 19th century that serpent-inspired jewelry went through a widespread revival. In the late 1800s and the early 1900s, during the Art Nouveau movement, many designers inspired by the sleek movement of snakes captured the creature’s movement through flowing, organic lines, lending sensuality and grace to brooches, rings, and necklaces.

Explore the deBoulle Collection Antique Serpent Pendent an exquisite 1850s pendant featuring old European-cut diamonds, a pink diamond, and green garnet eyes. This dual-metal creation, crafted with an 18K gold interior and a sterling silver top, boasts a striking darkened patina that enhances the brilliance of the diamonds for a stunning overall look and feel.

Prince Albert’s Gift to Queen Victoria

In 1839, Queen Victoria was given a serpent engagement ring from Prince Albert, a man who would stay by her side until his last breath. It was this very gift that sparked a romantic revolution across Europe, as the snake, which was once feared and revered, became a beloved emblem of eternal love.

The ring featured a coiled snake that was set with emerald, ruby, and diamond accent pieces around the snake’s head, eyes, and crown. The snake’s tail wrapped around to form a complete, unbroken circle. The emerald placed in the center of the snake’s head was seen as a sign of wisdom, while the diamonds would represent power and royalty.

To this day, the ring rests with Queen Victoria in the Royal Mausoleum at Frogmore.

Eternal Muse - The Symbolism of the Snake

Snake designs and jewelry weren’t just used to symbolize eternal love and devotion. They were also linked closely to both protection and wisdom. The Greeks saw healing in the silhouette of the snake: the Rod of Asclepius, entwined with a single serpent, became the emblem of medicine and renewal. Its twin, the caduceus, appeared during the 16th century as a forked staff embraced by two serpents in perfect balance, a symbol of harmony, protection, and transcendence.

But it was Queen Victoria’s mourning that crowned the serpent as a symbol of eternal love in the 19th century. After the untimely death of Prince Albert in 1861, the queen entered a lifelong period of mourning. In that time, the serpent emerged as a design of solemn beauty, no longer just an emblem of eternity, but of remembrance, fidelity, and the quiet resilience of grief.

The ouroboros, a snake devouring its own tail, became a fixture in mourning jewelry: brooches, rings, and lockets that whispered of endless love and the bittersweet poetry of rebirth.

The tradition lives on in modern heirlooms like our deBoulle Collection Snake Hoops, which are sculpted in luminous 18K yellow gold; their sinuous form glows with emerald-set eyes and a veil of brilliant diamonds that encapsulate the hoops.
