World’s Largest Natural Pearl

By de Boulle on April 22nd, 2014

While it’s not quite the world’s largest natural pearl, it is the largest natural pearl to come up to auction.

The pearl came from a private source, whose wife wore it as an earring. It was accompanied by a cultured pearl. The jewelry department head of the auction house had the pearl’s origin certified by the Swiss Gemmological Institute.

The pearl is an attractive white color with weak rosé and green overtones. Poetically, it is also referred to as the ‘orient of pearls.’ These overtones are due to an iridescence effect caused on the surface of pearls which greatly contribute to their beauty.

The pearl is expected to bring in somewhere around $400,000 at auction on May 1.
